Agroecology in Action: Profiles

Farmers are the keepers of complex and innovative techniques that, through agroecology, mix together local knowledge, traditional practices and innovation. In 2016 FAO started to collect examples of successful agroecological systems from our partners all over the world: these are 52 agroecology profiles in action.

Each profile provides a description of the agroecological approach applied in that farm, the challenges faced and impacts of the agroecological solutions. These agroecological approaches have been selected to illiustrate FAO’s 10-elements framework for Agroecology.

In order to give more visibility to the efforts of our partners, since May 2016 we have been publishing a new profile  each week on the Family Farming Knowledge Platform. Recently we launched the Agroecology Knowledge Hub (AKH) and the profiles have been included in the Hub too. From now on, each one of them will be highlighted on the AKH homepage for one week.

We are always looking for more initiatives to publicize. If you would like to be included and develop a profile with our help, please contact us: agroecology@fao.org

Online discussion on Agroecology for Sustainable Farming

FAO is conducting a series of online discussions on Agroecology. This action is being conducted by the TECA platform for the exchange of ideas and practices. The main objective of these discussions is to identify successful agroecological farming practices and exchange knowledge and experiences among stakeholders. After the discussion has concluded, a summary will be available on TECA website and Agroecology Knowledge Hub including the results and practices shared during these discussions.

During the introductory discussion 'Sustainable Farming through Agroecology' individuals shared their ideas about agroecology as well as several agricultural practices from nine different countries (Singapore, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, US, Brazil, Mali, Malawi, China). The discussion mainly focused on compost, green manuring, bio-fertilizers, nutrient recycling, intercropping and mixed cropping systems, System of Rice Intensification (SRI), as well as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and agroforestry.

Our current discussion focuses on the importance of agroecology in context of soil health. During this discussion ‘Agroecology and Soil Health’, our experts have provided knowledge on the importance of soil in the ecosystem, indicators of soil health and how agroecological approaches can help in further improving soil health.

The upcoming discussion will take place from 20th March to 10th April, 2017 and will be focused on 'Agroecology and Nutrition'. We warmly invite you to participate and take the opportunity to exchange your experience with people from other regions. You can register here:
